Hello EC’s, DEC’s, ASEC’s and other interested parties,
Mr. Jose Robles, KB5GL, has accepted the position of Emergency Coordinator (EC) for Victoria County in the South Texas Section. Jose was recommended by the DEC 10 Mr. John Taylor KE5HAM and approved by Section Manager Mr. Stuart Wolfe KF5NIX. District 10 comprises of Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Karnes, Jackson, Lavaca, Matagorda, Victoria, and Wharton counties.
Jose tells his story:
Born in Victoria Texas, I have been living in Victoria County since August of 1991. I’m married with four sons and retired from Union Carbide as a First Responder. In 1981 I enlisted in the United Stated Marine Corps Infantry. I am a multi-branch Veteran as I also did a tour in the United States Coast Guard as an Electronics Technician aboard the Aerostat program. I was stationed in Key West where I learned the science and art of radio.
I was hired by Union Carbide in 1991 as an Electronics and Instrumentation Technician. I managed a metrology lab, worked in the Radio shop where I learned the science and art of Land Mobile Radio. It was here that my coworkers introduced me to amateur radio. After the birth of my second son, in 1993 I earned my Technician class license. Little did I know that I would NOT have the time nor money to enjoy the hobby of Amateur radio…
I went on to become a Contract Administrator. I then chose to pursue Environmental, Health & Safety, achieving OSHA’s Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO) through the University of Texas at Arlington.
Once again, I changed career paths for Emergency Services & Security, where I served as a Fire Fighter/EMT, Rescue Team member, and Hazardous Material Specialist Pro Board certified in the state of Texas. During this time, I taught First aide & CPR as a BLS Instructor for the American Heart Association.
I retired in 2020, and after several difficult years I returned to Amateur radio. I re-earned my Technician class license in November of 2024, my General Class in December of 2024, and my Extra class license in March of 2025.
My interest has always been in serving my community. I believe that serving people in their most vulnerable time is something we are all commissioned to do by our faith and values. This is why my faith in the ARES organization’s mission is foundational to my values.
Doing the most good for the most people… we can use our hobby & our skills to help OUR community in their time of need. We prepare, we practice, and we stay connected. When the time comes, we say “I’m here for you brother”.
The goal for ARES in Victoria county is to build a resilient team ready and willing to assist our community and partners. Technology is changing fast; Amateur radio is evolving with it. We need and want people with skills and strengths to bring new capabilities. We want to establish relationships with our community partners to meet their needs and exceed their expectations as they respond to our community.
This appointment is effective August 13, 2025.
Regards to all,
Jeffery A Walter – KE5FGA
